Christine Andreeva was the post-doctoral fellow at C4SS from October 1, 2021-September 30, 2023. recently successfully defended her PhD at Dublin City University (DCU) on “EU Counter-terrorism’s Gradual Institutionalisation: Information-sharing and Cooperation in Law Enforcement and Intelligence Post-2015”. She has published articles with Global Affairs, ERA Forum and the Bulgarian Association for European law on the topic of EU harmonisation and institutionalisation measures in counter-terrorism after 2015. Her research has aimed to demonstrate the qualitative shift in EU counter-terrorism post-2015, as compared to previous critical junctures, such as the one after the Madrid and London attacks in 2004-2005. She has presented her research at academic conferences focused on EU integration and security topics. Christine previously studied European integration with focus on EU security policies in her Master studies at the Institute of European Studies in Brussels, and worked in the European Parliament as a policy advisor to an MEP.
Jonata Anicetti was the post-doctoral fellow at C4SS from Februay 1, 2022-January 31, 2024. He recently successfully defended his doctoral dissertation “Paying the Buyer: From One-Off Defense Offsets to Strategic Alliances,” thus earning the degree of Doctor of Political and Social Sciences of the European University Institute. His research has aimed to show when, why and how defense offsets – compensation to states for buying foreign weapons – have started to evolve into strategic alliances between foreign suppliers and domestic firms. Jonata has published articles with Defense & Security Analysis and RUSI Journal on the topic of defense offsets and has presented his research at academic conferences focused on international security and international political economy. He holds two Master’s Degrees, one in International Relations and European Studies (Cesare Alfieri) and one in Intelligence & International Security (King’s College London). Jonata has also worked as journalist and analyst for various companies.
Alexandr Burilkov was the post-doctoral fellow at C4SS from October 1, 2017-September 30, 2019. He completed his PhD on maritime security in the Western Pacific and the Persian Gulf at the University of Hamburg in 2017. He was previously a junior research fellow at the GIGA Hamburg. His research focuses on innovation in military strategy, the role of non-state proxy groups in foreign policy, and the security environment in the Western Pacific and the post-Soviet space; recently he has completed “Russian Maritime Strategy since the Ukrainian Crisis”, a chapter in an upcoming two-part volume on maritime security to be published by Routledge. He also participates in research focused on the quantitative analysis of the processes of influence and diffusion in regional organizations, especially using spatial and temporal methods; his most recent work in this theme, coathored with Tobias Lenz, is “Institutional pioneers in world politics: Regional institution building and the influence of the European Union” (EJIR 2016).
Izabela Surwillo was the post-doctoral fellow at C4SS from October 1, 2017-September 30, 2019. She earned her PhD in International Relations from the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. She received a master’s degree in International Relations from the University of St Andrews, UK and a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the University of Leicester, UK. She was a visiting researcher at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at the University College London, UK and a visiting researcher at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukraine. She was also a visiting research fellow at the Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany. As a part of her global teaching fellowship awarded by the Central European University she held a post of a visiting lecturer at the Univates University in Lajeado, Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil. She is a co-author (with K. Henderson and G. Lazaridis) of ‚Between Euroscepticism and Eurosupport: the attitudes of urban and rural populations in Poland 2000-2008’ (Europe-Asia Studies, 2010). Her current research interests include international relations theory, security studies and energy security. She is currently working on the paper in the area of critical security studies and on a book monograph on energy governance in the CEE region.
Huseyn Aliyev was the post-doctoral fellow at C4SS from October 1, 2016-September 30, 2017. He earned his PhD in Political Science from the University of Otago, New Zealand. From 2015 to 2016, he was lecturing Conflict and Area Studies courses at the University of Bremen, Germany. He was a Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bremen and visiting academic at St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford. Huseyn is an author of ‘Post-Communist Civil Society and the Soviet Legacy: Challenges of Democratisation and Reform in the Caucasus‘ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015). He also co-authored (with Emil A. Souleimanov) a monograph ‘Individual Disengagement of Avengers, Nationalists and Jihadists: Why Ex-Militants Choose to Abandon Violence in the North Caucasus’ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014). His most recent publications have appeared in Security Dialogue (2016), Terrorism and Political Violence (2015), International Security (2015), and The Journal of Strategic Studies (2015). Huseyn’s most recent monograph, entitled “When Informal Institutions Change. Institutional Reforms and Informal Practices in the former Soviet Union”, is currently in production with the University of Michigan Press. Huseyn’s current research interests are non-state and quasi-state armed actors in fragile and failed states, as well as informal institutions and practices in post-communist societies.
Dr. Evangelos (Evans) Fanoulis was the post-doctoral fellow at C4SS from October 1, 2015-September 30, 2017. He read for a MA in International Relations at War Studies Department, King’s College London, UK and for a MA and PhD in Ideology and Discourse Analysis at the Department of Government, University of Essex, UK. He was previously Lecturer in Politics at the University of Leicester and Fellow at the University of Essex. He worked as Research Officer for the FP7 ANVIL (Analysis of Civil Security Systems in Europe) Project, was a trainee at the EU Commission and European External Action Service and did his military service at the Greek ground forces. His main research interests lie within EU democracy, European security governance, democratic theory, civil, non-traditional and human security. He is currently publishing a research monograph entitled The Democratic Quality of European Security and Defence Policy: Between Practices of Governance and Practices of Freedom with Routledge. Other publications of his include: ‘’Understanding the Social Construction of the Democratic Deficit in CSDP: A Foucauldian Approach’, journal of European Security; and co-authored with Kirchner and Dorussen ‘Civil security in the EU: national persistence versus EU ambitions?’, journal of European Security. Further, he has contributed with book chapters to five edited volumes.
Dr. Andrea Gilli was the post-doctoral fellow at C4SS from October 1, 2014-September 30, 2016. He holds an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D in Social and Political Science from the European University Institute. In the past, he has been affiliated, conducted research or worked for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the NATO Defense College, the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty Organization, the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the Center for Transatlantic Relations/Johns Hopkins University, the European Union Institute for Security Studies and the Saltzman Institute for War and Peace Studies/Columbia University. In 2013, he has co-lead a task force on the modernization of European defense capabilities for the EU Military Committee and, over the years, he has provided consulting services to different multi-billion defense companies.
